Science Online: Oceans - #SciOOceans

She's back already, and this time she's been swimming with the sharks. Fresh from #SciOClimate, Laura's been off to #SciOOceans learning more tricks for effectively teaching earth sciences and helping out local researchers with a bit of water-borne fieldwork. Also stay tuned as my post from Spot On London is coming soon (only a little behind the times), see what everyone else thought here.

Name: Dr Laura Guertin

Date: 11th-13th October 2013

Location: Miami, FL, USA

ScienceOnline is an annual conference that addresses better science communication within the science community, with the public, and with policymakers. For the first time in October 2013, a multi-day ScienceOnline conference was held in Miami, Florida, with the focus on our Oceans. More than 175 scientists, students, journalists, conservationists and educators came together for sessions highlighting effective uses of social media and video, to strategies for outreach and advocacy for ocean research and conservation. The conference even included pre-conference workshops and post-conference fieldtrips that went canoeing in Everglades National Park and shark-tagging on a research vessel. The conference did an excellent job showcasing fun ways to highlight the work of scientists with The Story Collider to sharing a more serious message about the state of our oceans with the Beneath the Waves Film Festival. With the oceans covering 71% of the surface of our planet, ScienceOnline Oceans made an important contribution in reminding us all, scientists and citizens alike, that we need to protect and communicate on behalf of our oceans and all of its resources.
