About the Editors

Editor-in-Chief

Dan Tsang, PhD
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology,
Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong, China

Dan Tsang’s research at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology aspires to develop green technologies for carbon reduction, design sustainable biomass-derived carbon for emerging applications, pioneer a new research landscape of carbon-efficient processes, and promote resource circulation and sustainable development.

Associate Editors

Sze Dai Pang, PhD
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
National University of Singapore, Singapore

Dr Pang has been involved in research on advanced materials and technologies to drive greater sustainability and productivity for the built environment. In recent years, he has been involved in collaborative research with the industry in lowering the net carbon emission in the built environment by upscaling waste-to-resources to promote material circularity, and capturing carbon dioxide in building materials.

 Yuanzhi Tang, PhD
 Georgia Institute of Technology,
School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Atlanta, Georgia,  USA

Dr. Tang’s research interests address the complex interworking between human activities and the natural environment by exploring the biogeochemical reactions at solid-liquid interfaces. By employing advanced microscopy and spectroscopy techniques, her highly interdisciplinary research aims to correlate molecular scale mechanisms with macroscopic and field scale processes. Examples of her research topics include contaminant fate and transport, the occurrence and biogeochemical cycling of critical nutrients and metals, microbially mediated mineral formation and transformation, recovery of critical resources, and applications of synchrotron techniques.

Roberto Rinaldi, PhD
Department of Chemical Engineering,
Imperial College London, United Kingdom

Roberto Rinaldi is a leading expert in biomass conversion and chemical engineering, currently serving as a Reader (Associate Professor) in Applied Chemistry at Imperial College London's Department of Chemical Engineering. His research focuses on developing innovative processes and catalysts for transforming lignocellulosic biomass, emphasising lignin valorisation, into chemicals, biofuels, and materials. Through his work, Dr. Rinaldi aims to promote a sustainable future by reducing global reliance on fossil fuels and minimising greenhouse gas emissions.

Greeshma Gadikota, PhD
School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering,
Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, Ithaca, NY, USA

Dr. Gadikota directs the Sustainable Energy and Resource Recovery Group. She held postdoctoral research associate appointments at Princeton University and Columbia University, and a research associate appointment at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Her PhD in Chemical Engineering and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering and Operations Research are from Columbia University. Her BS in Chemical Engineering is from Michigan State University. She is a recipient of the DOE, NSF and ARO CAREER Awards, Sigma Xi Young Investigator Award, Cornell Engineering Research Excellence Award, Inaugural Cornell Rising Women Innovator Award, AICHE Sabic Award for Young Professionals from the Particle Technology Forum, and Young Researcher Award, The 15th International Conference on Gas-Liquid and Gas-Liquid-Solid Reactor Engineering Conference.

Shicheng Zhang, PhD
Fudan University,
Shanghai, China

Shicheng Zhang is the director of the Shanghai Technical Service Platform for Pollution Control and Resource Utilization of Organic Wastes. His research focuses on biomass and organic waste utilization by chemical, biological and biochemical methods, especially hydrothermal conversion of organic waste into high value-added products, such as chemicals, biofuels, and materials, promoting bio-based fuels and materials, resource recovery, circular economy, and sustainable development.

Advisory Editor

Yaoqing Zhang, PhD

Yaoqing is currently a Senior Editor for Nature Sustainability handling research and opinion from the broad areas of energy, materials and chemistry with sustainability relevance. He began his editorial career at Nature Communications where he covered a range of topics in energy materials and electrochemistry. Prior to joining the Nature family, Yaoqing held an assistant professorship at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. He obtained a PhD in chemistry from the University of St Andrews and then conducted postdoctoral research in Japan. Yaoqing is based in the Shanghai office.

Eric Piechota, PhD

Eric joined the 'Energy Materials' team at Nature Communications in 2021. He received a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he studied electron transfer mechanisms in ruthenium-based chromophores used in dye-sensitized solar energy conversion schemes. After, he performed postdoctoral research at The Ohio State University where he investigated excited-state deactivation of metal complexes used as phototherapeutic agents. Eric is based in the New York office and handles manuscripts relating to electro and photocatalysis.
