Fifty years ago, in 1971, Bang and Dyerberg published their first landmark paper on the Greenland Inuit. In the introduction, they stated their goal2:

“In an attempt to describe in detail the serum lipids in Eskimos and perhaps explain the low incidence of ischemic heart-disease in these people, we undertook an expedition to the north-west coast of Greenland in August and September 1970, in order to examine the serum-lipid pattern in Eskimos, hoping that the findings would throw some light on the pathogenetic role of serum lipids in atherosclerotic diseases, especially ischemic heart disease, in the Western world.”
