The use of medicines forms part of everyday dental practice. Medicinal products (as they are officially referred to) are heavily regulated in the UK as their misuse can have unintended or indeed potentially catastrophic effects on the recipient. The regulations are more stringent when compared with other substances for human consumption - food, for example.

A medicinal product is defined as: Any substance or combination of substances presented for treating or preventing disease in human beings; administered to human beings with a view to making a medical diagnosis or to restoring, correcting or modifying physiological function, by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action.1
