Non communicable diseases account for around 40% of the NHS budget and are the cause of 89% of all deaths with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being a major contributor: 13.6% of males and 8.3% of females die from ischaemic heart disease. There is a significant social gradient with people from the most deprived areas being almost four times as likely to die prematurely from heart disease compared to those living in the least deprived areas. In 2019 CVD was the cause of death of 26.4% of males and 23.1% of females over 40 years of age.1 Annual costs of treating CVD are estimated at £7.4 billion.2

Early detection of cardiovascular disease can improve and save lives. Since 2011 the improvements in heart disease have slowed. However there remains a big opportunity to improved CVD outcomes through treatment and prevention. It is estimated that the social return on investment of CVD prevention is £2.30 for every £1 invested over a ten-year period.3 The NHS Long Term Plan has committed to identify 80% of people with high blood pressure by 2029 and describes CVD prevention as the biggest area where the NHS can save lives over the next ten years.4 CVD is a key clinical area within the Core20PLUS5 strategy aimed at supporting Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) to target health inequalities5 and includes hypertension case finding as a key clinical component.
