Neonatal AKI in late preterm infants with patent ductus arteriosus

We read and evaluated the article by Guillet R. et al., which discusses the presence and management of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in cases of acute kidney injury in preterms below 1500 g [1]. The study reveals the preferred treatment modalities to be used in acute kidney injury (AKI) and PDA in preterms. Furthermore, the article makes speculations on the pathophysiological relationship between the presence of PDA and AKI development, as well as the effects of various PDA treatment modalities on the course of AKI. The study is enlightening and valuable as it sheds light on the treatment course of PDA and AKI, which are quite common in preterms.

This study does not include a late preterm case group in which PDA is highly uncommon. We would like to share six late preterm cases of HsPDA and AKI diagnosed in our clinic. The mutual component of these cases was the rapid development of AKI following PDA diagnosis. One of the HsPDA cases did not have AKI at the time of diagnosis, but developed it subsequent to oral ibuprofen treatment, and recovered after switching from ibuprofen to paracetamol. The clinical characteristics of the six cases is displayed in Table 1.
