To the editor:

I do not dispute that the PGP tripeptide binds the CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors, but I do contend that there is no causal relationship between the chemotactic activity of the tripeptide and the conserved GP motif observed in ELR chemokines. I propose that the mechanisms by which ELR chemokines and PGP activate CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors are completely unrelated. The authors claim that none of the ELR− CXC chemokines possess the GP motif, but this is not correct, as PF-4 has the GP motif (Fig. 1). Furthermore, the GP motif is not absolutely conserved among ELR chemokines, as the corresponding residues in NAP-2 are 'GT' (Fig. 1).
