A radical new theory suggests that if extra dimensions exist beyond the usual four of space-time, they do not necessarily have to be curled up out of sight. So say physicists Lisa Randall of Princeton University and Raman Sundrum of Boston University in Physical Review Letters1.

Many physicists striving to understand the basic forces of nature now suspect that we are hampered by an imperfect view of reality. Our three-dimensional space, plus the fourth dimension of time, they say, may be simply a 'subspace' of a higher-dimensional universe, which makes our view just as limited as that of the mariners who thought the Earth flat.
