Pharmacogenomics and diagnostics

The field of pharmacogenomics addresses the issues of gene sequence variation and its effects on drug-response variability as a platform for the discovery of novel, highly effective therapies1. The enticing value for both drug developers and consumers is that this will help reduce the cost of drug development, enhance treatment for underserved medical areas, and ultimately improve both the safety and cost-effectiveness of new drugs.

The rarely discussed corollary of this hypothesis is that fast, easy-to-use, highly accurate diagnostics will be needed to implement this possibility in real-world medical practice. Just as many biotechnology companies during the late 1970s and early 1980s gained a financial foothold in the pharmaceutical industry through creating diagnostic tests, so too, pharmacogenomics offers start-up and established biotechnology companies alike an additional revenue stream through diagnostic applications.
