Abstract
E. coli transformed with appropriate plasmid vectors express human β1 and β2-adrenergic receptors that retain the binding properties of the corresponding receptors in mammalian tissues. The experimental procedure required for pharmacological studies on active receptors expressed in bacteria is considerably simplified compared to that used for the same experiments in reference tissues. Moreover, in this bacterial system, receptor-binding assays display low background and high reproducibility. These advantages demonstrate that bacterial clones expressing membrane receptors constitute an alternative screening procedure for synthetic compounds specific for each β-adrenergic receptor subtype.
