Photo competition highlights the complexity of microscopic natural specimens.

Seeing beyond the limits of human eyes has long fascinated both scientists and the public. The Small World Photomicrography Competition, run by camera company Nikon, continues to demonstrate why. Shown is a selection of images from this year’s competition that intrigued us here in the Nature office.
