Diagnosis | Porcine juvenile pustular psoriaform dermatitis

The signalment (young pig, white breed) and location (medial thighs, abdomen) and classical appearance (coalescing annular to serpiginous raised, crusty, non-pruritic) of the lesions, combined with the histopathologic findings, are consistent with porcine juvenile pustular psoriaform dermatitis (PJPPD)1.

PJPPD was formerly known as pityriasis rosea. Because the dermatopathy in swine is clinically and histopathologically distinct from human pityriasis rosea, which may be associated with viral infection3,4, 'pityriasis rosea' is no longer an appropriate diagnosis in swine. PJPPD is a sporadic disease that typically occurs in 3- to 14-week-old animals but may appear in animals as young as 2 weeks and as old as 10 months1,5. The etiology is unknown, but there seems to be a higher incidence in white pigs, usually the Landrace breed, and some researchers suggest that genetic predisposition or familial susceptibility4,5,6,7 is involved. Therefore, PJPPD does not pose a zoonotic risk.
