Diagnosis | Caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus infection and verminous pneumonia due to Muellerius capillaris

This case has multiple diagnoses as evidenced by the serologic and histological findings. Bilateral rales were present on auscultation and the etiology was multifactorial, including both a pyogranulomatous and verminous pneumonia. In addition, the animal was unable to walk or to stand without assistance, and had forelimb arthritis. The agar-gel immunodiffusion test was positive for CAE antibody.

Caprine arthritis-encephalitis is common in the United States compared with other countries, such as the United Kingdom1. A prevalence study of CAE virus antibody in goats in the United States found that of 196 herds tested, 73% had one or more seropositive members2. In addition, a serologic prevalence study of CAE virus in California goat dairies found 53% of goats in 13 California goat dairies had antibodies to CAE virus3.
