Lizards with big toes hang on in hurricanes

Researchers investigate whether hurricanes Maria and Irma drove natural selection in Caribbean lizards.

Hurricanes can be deadly to plants, people and animals. The idea that such destructive events could drive natural selection is controversial. Now, research on Caribbean lizards suggests that hurricanes selected for certain traits which help them cope with high wind speeds and might even influence their evolution.
