A route to rational anticancer combinations

Combination therapy, mixing agents targeting key pathways in a synergistic or an additive manner, is a cornerstone of cancer therapy. Given the breadth of targets in oncology, identifying effective combinations remains a challenge. Testing combinations in clinical trials is costly and preclinical models do not recapitulate disease complexity. Now, reporting in Nature Biotechnology, teams led by Oliver Jonas and Joe Gray have designed a technological platform that enables the identification of effective drug combinations and biomarkers of response. Some combinations resulted in tumour remission in mouse models of breast cancer.
