Abstract
BARON AND BUCKER1 have shown that circulating interferon is detectable in mice given an intravenous injection of various types of viruses. The interferon production was stimulated by the virus in the inoculum and not by newly replicated viruses, as serum samples assayed for interferon activity were taken at 4.5 h after the intravenous injection, too early for injected viruses to replicate. However, the viral component responsible for interferon induction in vivo has not been determined. We describe here our attempts to determine which component(s) of HVJ (Sendai virus) is required for interferon production in mice and report that this activity is found in the surface glyco-protein, particularly in the aggregated form.
