Abstract
DESPITE several reports of fossil vertebrates from the Arabian region1, Tleel's2 brief reference to fossil mammals in the Dam Formation1,3,4 near Dhahran was the first published reference to Tertiary mammals, even though specimens of Platybelodon have been included in oil company collections since the 1930s In 1974 we found two small faunas in the region around Ad Dabtiyah and at Jabal Midra ash-Shamali (Fig. 1). this material was added to specimens already recovered by oil company geologists and we describe these findings here. These faunas are very important as they are the first Tertiary mammalian faunas from the Arabian region and they offer the possibility of establishing faunal affinities between the important African and Asian Miocene faunas.
