Position-dependent development of tobacco meristems

Abstract

THE apical meristems of angiosperms exhibit indeterminate growth during vegetative development and determinate growth in the production of thorns and flowers1. The mechanism(s) controlling the conversion from indeterminate to determinate growth is poorly understood, although photoperiod and temperature have been shown in many plants to be important environmental signals for flower induction2. In ‘day-neutral’ plants, which are not strictly regulated by photoperiod, the conversion of their meristems to the determinate flowering condition seems to be endogenously regulated. We have examined this conversion in Nicotiana tabacum cv. Wisconsin 38, a day-neutral plant. Our data show that a uniform number of nodes is produced before conversion, and this pattern of meristem development is regulated by information supplied to the meristem by the plant.
