Abstract
CURRENT concepts concerning the origin of plastids have revived the symbiotic theory of Mereschkowski1 and Famintzin2. Evidence in support of this theory has come from recent work on in vitro culture of chloroplasts3–5. We provide further evidence here by the demonstration of a rigescent integument surrounding the chloroplasts of some siphonaceous algae.
