Past Wind Strength from Isotope Studies

Abstract

IN this communication we explore the possibility that isotope studies can give palaeoclimatological data in addition to the well known determinations of past temperatures1–3. We consider that the temperature difference between the equatorial and polar regions (ΔT) largely determines the storminess of our weather, and we will show that this information is recorded in the 18O/16O and 2H/1H ratios of the ice in the Greenland and Antarctic ice caps.
