Abstract
IN a recent sounding rocket flight in the southern hemisphere (launched from Woomera, South Australia, on November 11, 1970) the X-ray source Cygnus X1 was observed by a 1,000 cm2 collimated proportional counter sensitive to X-rays in the range 2–14 keV. Each X-ray event was indicated through the telemetry link by a 300 µs analogue pulse whose height was proportional to the incoming photon energy. This method of data transmission allows good timing accuracy together with a reasonable spectral resolution.
