Role of Haemichromes in the Formation of Inclusion Bodies in Haemoglobin H Disease

Abstract

In haemoglobin H disease, excess β chains form haemoglobin tetramers which are unstable and which readily precipitate to form inclusion bodies. Electron paramagnetic resonance and spectroscopic evidence indicates that the precipitated haemoglobin is in the form of a haemichrome.
