Abstract
THE reaction of ferric chloride with the Schiff base, N : N′ bis-salicylidene ethylenediamine(salen), in acetone solution produces the complex (Fe salen Cl). The behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility of powdered samples of this complex indicates that there is an anti-ferromagnetic interaction between the iron atoms. This effect has previously been explained1 in terms of either layer or binuclear structures, and the latter model gives a somewhat better fit between theoretical and experimental susceptibilities. The complex is monomeric in chloroform solution and non-conducting in nitromethane, however, so that any covalent association in the solid state does not persist in solution.
