Abstract
SINCE the discovery by Smithies that haptoglobins show three distinct patterns in starch-gel electrophoresis, the interest in these α-2-globulins has become widespread1. This property has an immediate application in anthropological and genetic investigations, and many investigations were carried out to determine the distribution of haptoglobin types in various populations and ethnic groups. It is well known that blood-group frequencies were previously used for such studies. But, as will be discussed later, haptoglobin typing proved more accurate in this regard.
