Growth Hormone Action on Rat Liver RNA Polymerase

Abstract

HYPOPHYSECTOMY of the adult rat results in a loss of weight and protein content of the liver and other tissues1. These effects can be reversed by treatment of the rat with growth hormone. This control by growth hormone of protein biosynthesis is reflected in alterations in the ability of ribosomal preparations of liver and other tissues to incorporate amino-acids into protein in vitro2. The hormonal control of protein synthesis can be at least partially explained in terms of hormonal control of the rate of synthesis of messenger and other RNA3,4.
