Abstract
THE summary by Keller1 indicates that little progress has been made recently in the qualitative assessment of chemical weathering, since the equations of soil property by Jenny2 and weathering rate by Jackson et al.3 have not been developed. Recently, Loughnan4 discussed several important aspects of weathering; but his paper is neither complete in itself nor intimately related to the main equations. The purpose of this communication is to elaborate on the last variable, ‘parent material’, in the equation of Jenny2 with the aid of the recent data of Bayliss and Loughnan5,6, Craig7, Loughnan and Bayliss8, and Loughnan et al.9,10.
