Three-dimensional Seismic Models with Continuously Variable Velocity

Abstract

RECENTLY, several efforts have been made to complete our knowledge of the structure of the Earth's upper mantle by detailed observation of seismic body waves, especially by their amplitude–distance curves1,2. During these investigations difficulties appeared in the interpretation of observed results. This is, first of all, caused by the fact that theoretical investigations, which are mostly limited to the application of the ray theory, do not at present allow for the solution of some basic problems of the propagation of elastic waves in inhomogeneous media3,4.
