Flow-stick Transition in Powders

Abstract

GREGORY1 has defined two types of flow in powder agglomerates; ‘stick and slip’ flow and free flow. It is well known that fine particles tend to stick and that larger particles flow more easily. Adding larger particles to a very fine powder is one method of causing it to flow2 Some experiments have been carried out with sand flowing under gravity through a circular orifice in an attempt to determine the particle size at the transition point from stick and slip flow to free flow.
