Abstract
BOTH 2-(α-hydroxybenzyl)-benzimidazole (HBB) and guanidine are specific and potent inhibitors of picorna-virus multiplication1. However, in virus-infected cell cultures maintained for a prolonged period in the presence of either compound, drug-resistant mutants regularly emerge2–4. Recently it has been shown that mutants of poliovirus resistant to either HBB or guanidine exhibit only a small degree of reciprocal cross-resistance5,6 Combined treatment with HBB and guanidine was, therefore, expected to have a greater suppressive effect on virus reproduction than either compound alone. This proved to be the case in experiments with ‘Coxsackie B3’ and ‘ECHO 5’ viruses5,6.
