Abstract
IN the latter half of human pregnancy a decrease in blood hæmoglobin concentration usually occurs and this is associated with a decrease in plasma iron concentration and an increase in plasma total iron-binding capacity1,2. The mechanism producing these changes is not fully understood. They may be due partly to iron deficiency3,4, one of the main causes of which is the rapidly increasing foetal utilization of iron. If so, the changes might be more pronounced in rats and rabbits, in which the combined demands of the fœtuses would be relatively greater.
