Abstract
THE photosensitizing properties on the skin of some furocoumarins have been studied extensively by us since 19531 and later by other workers2. While the relationships of chemical structure to photodynamic effects are well known, the mechanism of action of these substances is at present not clear, in spite of the fact that xanthotoxin is used therapeutically for leucodermia. Recently, Pathak and Fellman3 pointed out interesting relationships between activating and fluorescent wave-lengths and the photodynamic properties of many furocoumarins. Furthermore, we have been able to show4 that furocoumarins do not operate by a photo-oxidative process on a protein substrate as do other known photodynamic substances (hæmatoporphyrin, hypericin, erythrosin, rose bengal, benzpyrene, etc.5).
