Hæmolytic Activity of Colloidal Silica

Abstract

COLLOIDAL silica is highly toxic when administered parenterally1,2. In isolated biological systems silica has been shown to interfere with some enzymes3,4, activate blood clotting and pharmacologically active substances in plasma5 and interfere with the red cell envelope6. Most of these effects are probably due to the adsorption and partial denaturation of proteins at the surface of silica particles5,7.
