Abstract
IN the course of an investigation of pyrimidine derivatives as antagonists of pteroylglutamic acid (P.G.A.), it was found that the growth of Lactobacillus casei with the latter in the absence of purine was inhibited by nearly all 2: 4-diaminopyrimidines1. Many of the inhibitions were shown to be reversible by (a) pteroylglutamic acid or (b) purines, or both. Further studies2 established that members of the 2: 4-diamino-5-aryloxypyrimidines (I) were among the strongest inhibitors of pteroylglutamic acid examined by us.
