Abstract
THE diatomic molecules of the lighter elements of the sixth family of the Periodic Table, like O2, S2, SO, have 3Σ terms as their ground states. There is some doubt if this still prevails with the heavier elements of that group. Spectroscopic investigations have so far not been able to show whether the ground states of Se2, Te2, SeO, etc., are 3Σ or 1Σ states.
