The centrifugal and the drag forces are acting in opposite directions. (a) Unfractionated cells enter the elutriation chamber. (b) Size gradient balanced by centrifugal force and counterflow (drag force) of elutriation fluid keeps cells inside the chamber. (c) Increasing flow rate elutes smaller cells first followed by larger ones.
