Unlocking the untapped potential of subsoils is crucial to reshape agricultural systems to make them resilient to climate change and capable of meeting the growing global food demand. The current landscape of subsoils for sustainable agriculture is marked by an increasing recognition of their potential in enhancing soil health, crop productivity, and environmental sustainability. Recent technical advancements revolve around understanding and harnessing the unique properties of subsoils, such as their capacity for deep nutrient and water storage, which can be critical during periods of drought or nutrient scarcity. Efforts are being made to develop strategies for subsoil management that include deep tillage and the incorporation of organic amendments to improve soil structure, aeration, and microbial activity. Additionally, there is a growing interest in exploring the root system physiology and cover crops in accessing subsoil resources and promoting nutrient cycling.

This Collection encourages original research on integrating subsoil management into holistic agricultural practices, with an emphasis on site-specific approaches that consider the unique characteristics of each subsoil and its interaction with the topsoil. This includes the use of precision agriculture technologies to map and monitor subsoil properties, enabling targeted interventions that optimize subsoil health and function.

This collection supports and amplifies research relates to SDG 2.
