In the version of this article initially published, the Figure 1a–f caption and Figure 1c–f callouts weren’t updated after the earlier version of Figure 1c became Figure 2a. Therefore, in the “Intrusion observation and electrochemical interpretation” section, the citation in text to “Fig. 1c” has been changed to “Fig. 1c–e” and the callout to “Fig. 1f” now cites “Fig. 1e,” while the figure legend has been amended to read “c–e, Colourized operando SEM images of lithium plating experiments outlined in a with each image corresponding to the position in Fig. 2a.” The changes have been made in the HTML and PDF versions of the article.
