Jean-Claude Schmit, Chief Executive Officer, CRP-Santé
Luxembourg may be one of the smallest countries in Europe, but it has growing ambitions in biomedical science. When the country's life science research and public health organization, Centre de Recherche Public de la Santé (Public Research Centre for Health), formed in 1988, it was more like a loose federation of independent units. That began changing in 2007, when Jean-Claude Schmit was appointed chief executive of CRP-Santé. Schmit and his team have since brought stronger administration, organization and management to CRP-Santé, and have focused the institute on a smaller number of research areas: cardiovascular diseases, immunology and allergic diseases, oncology, virology and public health. In those areas, Schmit is using his background in medicine, science and management to further focus the country's resources on personalized medicine and seek collaborations to leverage the country's small size, but specific sets of expertise. Schmit talks to Nature about how and why small can be successful.
