Sir,
We thank the authors for presenting this valuable work, which corroborates the findings of our study showing a reduction in the incidence of serious eye injury in Scotland.
Their data were collected retrospectively from a similar time, between 2005 and 2008, from one tertiary referral centre in Scotland, and the incidence noted for ocular trauma requiring hospital admission was 2.17 per 100 000. This compares favourably with the prospective incidence for the whole of Scotland in 2009 of 1.96 per 100 000 reported in our paper.1
We agree with the authors’ suggestion that changes in the management of ocular trauma and successful public health prevention strategies have helped to reduce the incidence of blinding eye injuries.
