Abstract
IN a series of experiments designed to explore the cellular basis of immunological tolerance1, it was discovered that the response of the draining lymph nodes of mice to a subcutaneous injection of sheep red blood cells, was reduced by a slightly previous or simultaneous injection of the same antigen into the peritoneal cavity. This phenomenon will be termed “pre-emption”, in the sense that the intraperitoneal injection “appropriates or takes beforehand”2 the capacity to make a local immune response on subsequent subcutaneous injection. This is a descriptive term, pending the invention of a better one based on a clearly understood mechanism.
