Spondyloarthritis pathology is manifested by increased myeloid infiltration of the joints. Here the authors show that in a mouse model of spondyloarthritis, a single dose of a microbial ligand curdlan induces persistent extramedullary myelopoiesis in the spleen and joints, which is driven by GM-CSF and can be amplified by exogenous IL-33.

| Open AccessP38α/JNK signaling restrains erythropoiesis by suppressing Ezh2-mediated epigenetic silencing of Bim
Erythropoietin (EPO) stimulates erythropoiesis and is commonly used to treat anemia. Here Hu et al. find that P38α/JNK signaling restrains erythropoiesis independently of EPO by regulating epigenetic silencing of the proapoptotic protein Bim, and thus identify putative targets for the treatment of anemic disorders resistant to EPO.

| Open AccessTransposon-modified antigen-specific T lymphocytes for sustained therapeutic protein delivery in vivo
Delivery of therapeutic proteins to patients may be costly to administer, and often requires repeated injections. Here, the authors use antigen-specific T cells expressing erythropoietin, and show that following transfer in mice, cell expansion and erythropoietin production can be boosted by vaccination, raising the haematocrit.

Disrupted erythropoietin signalling promotes obesity and alters hypothalamus proopiomelanocortin production
Erythropoietin circulates in the blood and is essential for erythropoiesis but its role in metabolic homeostasis has not been examined. Tenget al. show that when the erythropoietin receptor is only expressed in erthyroid cells, mice develop obesity and insulin resistance, suggesting that the receptor has a key role in fat mass accumulation.
