Fungal infection

Fungal infection, also known as a mycosis, refers to the invasion of a host's tissue by specific types of fungi. Mycoses often start in the lungs following inhalation of fungal spores or on the skin due to localized colonization.

Human T_H17 cells engage gasdermin E pores to release IL-1α on NLRP3 inflammasome activation

Gasdermin E pore formation has been associated with pyroptotic cell death. Here the authors identify gasdermin E pores in a subset of human T_H17 cells and show that rather than killing these cells the pores enable the release of IL-1α on NLRP3 inflammasome activation as an antifungal immune response.

Fungal sensing by dectin-1 directs the non-pathogenic polarization of T_H17 cells through balanced type I IFN responses in human DCs

Gringhuis and colleagues show that the extent of type I IFN responses induced by fungal stimulation in human DCs modulate the activation of TGF-β and the production of pathogenic or non-pathogenic T_H17 cells.

Anti-fungal role for type I IFN as dectin-1 triggers non-pathogenic T_H17 cell development

The fungal pathogen receptor dectin-1 instructs the development of non-pathogenic T_H17 cells via TGFβ activation. This process requires strict control of the expression of type I interferon to ensure a delicate balance in the expression of its effector genes that control the release of active TGFβ.
