Hello everyone and welcome to the Promethean Cell. In this first blog post, I would like to introduce you to budding research in stem cell biology and regenerative medicine. I’m a second year postdoc and my research focuses on the early stages of cardiac development using mouse stem cells. My research and this blog is a continuous learning process for me, so feel free to send me a tweet (@adaaocom) with any feedback or suggestions.
The recent boom in stem cell and related research challenges many pre-conceived notions we have about science, medicine, engineering, public policies, and ethics. The uncertainly is palatable and we honestly don’t know where they will lead. That’s why it’s so important for the general public and the scientific community to keep abreast of new developments because we will all bear the responsibility for the outcomes, and we cannot claim ignorance or allow fear to deter that responsibility. I hope to contribute to those discussions by communicating key concepts and summarize current views on the subject.
Now that I’ve declaimed from my soapbox, what exactly will I blog about? The possibilities are endless. Recent discoveries in the stem cell field are incredibly exciting. This blog will encompass issues like basic biology, opinions and views, and where we may go next in terms of applicable therapeutics. I’m really aiming to put together the “big picture”.
Sure, the science and biology is exciting, but we have to get our heads out of the lab once in a while. Stem cells have profoundly impacted our understanding of biology, but what does that all mean for everyone? How will all this contribute to future generations, if it does at all? I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I invite you to join me as I churn through these issues.
