The image shows lower motor neurons, neuromuscular junctions and vascular plexus of mouse skeletal muscle. Lumbrical muscles of the hindfoot were dissected, and whole-mount immunofluorescent staining was performed before confocal imaging. The neuromuscular and vascular systems can be analysed in mouse models of neurological disorders, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease and spinal muscular atrophy, to enhance our understanding of the underlying neuropathological processes.

  • Stroke has been misplaced in the International Classification of Disease (ICD) since 1955, but is now classed as a neurological disease in the new ICD-11. The reclassification required a bureaucratic struggle between clinicians and the World Health Organization, but will bring great benefits.

  • Eteplirsen, a compound designed to restore dystrophin in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, controversially received approval by the FDA in 2016. Owing to limited clinical data, the approval was based on eteplirsen’s effect on dystrophin expression. Now, the dystrophin quantification results have been published, and although low levels of dystrophin expression are shown, the quantification remains debatable.
