Now seeking submissions for Early Career Commentaries!

This article type offers opportunities for trainees and early-stage investigators (within 10 years of terminal research degree or residency and have not had R01 or equivalent) to share their scientific ideas and perspectives. 

Topics can include journal-club style commentaries, research perspectives and opinions, comments on current issues, dueling opinions, or another focus. If discussing a current debate, we encourage authors to provide the historical context and suggest constructive approaches. Manuscripts should be less than 1,000 words and include 15 references or fewer. One figure or table is allowed, but not required. There is no abstract for this type of article. All proposed authors must meet the definition of a trainee or early-stage investigator (within 10 years of terminal research degree or residency and not having received an R01 award or equivalent).

Pre-submission inquiries are required. Inquiries must be addressed to journal@acnp.org and include the following information:

1. Tentative title
2. List of authors, their current rank/positions, and institutional affiliation
3. A short summary of the topic to be covered

Inquiries that do not include the proposed authors’ position and trainee or early-stage investigator status, as well as other requested information, will not be considered. Priority will be given to inquiries that focus on novel and/or timely topics (scientific, social, policy, equity, and ethics) of broad interest and importance to the larger NPP and ACNP communities. Please note that short literature reviews are not appropriate for this article type. Preference will be given to inquiries that offer novel, timely, and diverse scientific perspectives and go beyond reviewing the current literature. Preference may also be given to submissions that include multiple authors across diverse career stages (undergraduate/graduate student, post-bac, post-doc, etc.), racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds, as well as from diverse geographic locations and institutions.

Inquiries will be reviewed in several rounds by the NPP Special Projects Team and Senior Editors. One-two inquiries will be selected per round to proceed with submission. Submissions will then undergo the standard NPP peer review process.
