Journal Information

Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering is a new online journal launched in January 2024.

Our Reviews aim to be balanced and objective analyses of the selected topic – with descriptions of relevant scientific literature and discussions that are easy to grasp for recent graduates in any discipline related to electrical and electronic engineering, as well as informing principal investigators and industry-based research scientists of the latest advances. Reviews should provide the authors' insight into future directions and their opinion of the major challenges faced by researchers in the field.

Perspectives – as the name suggests – take a look at a topic from a slightly different angle. They may offer more personal viewpoints, explain the historical background to a topic, or discuss some of the social, ethical or environmental factors related to electrical engineering and electronics research in academia and industry.

Our Comments are agenda-setting, authoritative, informed and often provocative expert pieces calling for action on topical issues pertaining to scientific research and/or its political, ethical and social ramifications. Comments are generally not peer reviewed, and we encourage authors to express their opinions.

Reviews, Perspectives and Comments are commissioned by the editorial team.

Aims & scope

Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering aims to cover the traditional core subjects of the field — power, electronics, control systems, signal processing and telecommunication engineering — providing insight to researchers, engineers and industry experts as well as non-specialists interested in specific areas related to electronics and electrical engineering. The topics may include but are not limited to: power grids, renewable energy generation and storage, electronic circuits, wireless communications and robotics. The journal also aims to bring to the attention of its readers topics beyond engineering research with particular focus on societal, ethical, environmental and commercial aspects of electrical engineering. Our broad scope and accessible formats ensure that work published in our journal reaches the widest possible audience.

Online publication

Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering is an exclusively online publication. Articles are published using an Advanced Online Publication process, giving our authors an earlier publication date and allowing our readers to access papers several weeks before they appear in a specific issue. Note that papers published online are definitive and may be altered only through the publication of an Addendum or Correction, so authors should make every effort to ensure that the page proofs are correct.

Content types

We publish a range of content types (link), including research Reviews, Perspectives, Comments, Lab to Fab, Viewpoints, Q&As and Correspondences that elaborate on significant advances in the field and cover topical issues.
