Mission

The mission of the International Society for Micorbial Ecology (ISME) is to promote the exchange of scientific information on microbial ecology. We do this by organizing meetings, sponsoring publications, promoting education and research, and promoting interaction between scientists.

Objectives

  • To organize meetings including the biennial International Symposium on Microbial Ecology.
  • To sponsor the official publication of The ISME Journal and ISME Communications. 
  • To promote education and research activities in microbial ecology, especially at the international and regional level.
  • To facilitate interaction between workers in microbial ecology and other disciplines.

History of the ISME

The ISME was formed in the summer of 1998 to promote the exchange of scientific information on microbial ecology. 

The ISME was incorporated as a nonprofit, tax-exempt, scientific and educational organization under the laws of the state of Michigan, September 15, 1998. The ISME office was moved to Geneva, Switzerland, 2004.
