    Alqassim et al find that RNA editing, known to be induced by IFN-1 in macrophages by the enzyme APOBEC3A, is required for the transcriptional, pro-inflammatory and metabolic responses that drive M1 macrophage polarization. APOBEC3A-mediated editing is also induced by IFN-1 exposure in tumor-associated macrophages isolated from ovarian cancer-related ascites fluid, pointing to a wide role for APOBEC3A in macrophages.

    He et al. assessed different parameters of tactile processing in children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). They found evidence for disorder-specific alterations of lower-level sensory processing, which can be related back to higher-level clinical symptoms.

    Jeremy Gauthier et al. present the chromosome scale assembly of the genome of the parasitic wasp C. congregata and show that bracovirus genes have colonized all ten chromosomes. Comparison with genome scaffolds of another wasp reveals a striking stability of these regions over ~53 million years, suggesting strong evolutionary constraints.

    Rook et al. establish a viral gene transfer system to perform optogenetics in pigeons. They deliver ChR2 via AAV1 into the visual entopallium and show its behavioral relevance for contrast perception, verifying the applicability of optogenetics in an avian species.

    Anzai et al. propose a deep learning approach to estimate the 3D hemodynamics of complex aorta-coronary artery geometry in the context of coronary artery bypass surgery. Their method reduces the calculation time 600-fold, while allowing high resolution and similar accuracy as traditional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method.

    A huge amount of intrigue surrounds the aging process. Senescence—the decreased likelihood of reproduction and the increased chance of mortality—is a hallmark of aging. The reduced ability of senescent cells to maintain protein homeostasis (proteostasis) has been well-established in nematodes but this phenomenon had yet to be directly demonstrated in human cells. Sabath et al. recently provided compelling evidence that proteostasis collapse is indeed intrinsic to human cell senescence, which may have broad implications in the underlying processes of human aging.

    Protein aggregation and phase separation appear to play important roles in diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal lobar dementia (FTLD), but the interplay between different participating molecular events-which may facilitate or inhibit one another-can be difficult to study by conventional ensemble methods. In a recent study, Kevin Rhine and co-workers make use of point mutations to demonstrate the contrasting behaviour of condensates arising from Glycine and Arginine FUS mutants using single molecules fluorescence measurements.

    The CRISPR-Cas toolbox allows genetic manipulation of cultured cells, plants and animals on the basis of simpler RNA-guided DNA recognition. It has provided breakthrough scientific opportunities to engineer desirable traits, cure genetic diseases and enable point-of-care diagnostics. A recent study by Joseph Bondy-Denomy and colleagues further equips this toolbox to cut larger chunks of DNA from a cell’s genome.

Whilst we are aware of environmental factors that can disturb our circadian rhythms, the precise mechanisms that control molecular time cues have remained elusive. Beesley and co-workers demonstrate that diseases associated with cytoplasmic crowding affect the sleep-wake cycle. They also pinpoint a precise time-limiting step in the trafficking of the pacemaker protein PERIOD.
