Focus
Focus on Cell biology of metabolism
Under physiological conditions, cells use a variety of pathways to generate energy and synthesize cellular building blocks including lipids, carbohydrates and nucleotides. Perhaps unsurprisingly, alterations in metabolic pathways have been implicated in many pathophysiological conditions. Indeed, cancer and normal cells differ dramatically in terms of their energy requirements and use of metabolic pathways. Obesity is essentially a metabolic disorder, and studies on the mechanisms underlying glucose metabolism and insulin resistance could lead the way to the development of new treatments for diabetes and obesity. Mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic impairment is also thought to contribute to neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Thus, a complete understanding of how these biochemical metabolic pathways inform cell biological processes is critical for the prevention and treatment of these diseases. This web focus on the cell biology of metabolism presents a collection of research and review articles published in Nature Cell Biology in the past four years in this fast-moving field. The focus highlights our current knowledge on metabolism and its importance for normal physiology and disease.
