The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 has precipitated the present outbreak of COVID-19, a highly infectious respiratory disease. This Collection brings together advances in the tools researchers are developing to combat this pandemic – from methods of detection, to potential treatment – updates relating to current events and epidemiological research, and insights into the virus’ origin, evolution and biology, including potential animal vectors.

Editors

Cheng-Wen Lin is a Professor at the Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology of China Medical University, Taiwan. He received his PhD from National Tsing-Hua University, Taiwan, and is an expert in molecular virology. His research focuses on the pathogenesis and antivirals of (re)emerging viruses, particular flaviviruses and coronaviruses. Cheng-Wen Lin has been an Editorial Board member of Scientific Reports since 2019.

 

 

Mehdi Mirsaeidi is an Associate Professor of pulmonary and critical care, and public health at the University of Miami, USA. After receiving his MPH at the University of Tehran, Iran, and subsequent clinical training, he began an infectious diseases fellowship at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, USA, followed by an internal medicine residency at the George Washington University Providence Hospital in DC, before his current appointment at the University of Miami, where he is also Director of the Sarcoidosis Program. His lab is interested in studying novel biomarkers that are involved in the context of pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Dr Mirsaeidi joined the Editorial Board of Scientific Reports in 2020.
